Position Description

The Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is recruiting a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor who will be appointed to the Leon S. Robertson Faculty Development Chair in Injury Prevention. The person who will serve in this Chair is selected on the basis of his or her outstanding contribution to the field of injury prevention, and promise as a leader who can make substantial contributions in teaching, scholarship, policy, and practice in injury prevention.


This position will be in the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, one of ten CDC-funded “centers for excellence” in injury research in the United States. The theme of the Center is “Closing the Gap between Research and Practice to Reduce the Burden of Injury”. Within this overarching theme, the Center’s mission is to conduct high quality research that informs policies and programs to improve the prevention and treatment of injuries; ensure that research is translated into practice and that practice informs research through meaningful collaborations; and integrate research and practice into training and education programs. The Center seeks a new faculty member who will complement and expand the work of its large, multi-disciplinary faculty.


The focus of the candidate’s work may include unintentional and/or intentional injury and may emphasize primary, secondary, and/or tertiary prevention of high priority injury problems. Training and experience in a core discipline of injury control is essential (e.g., epidemiology, law, criminology, economics, health outcomes research, social and behavioral sciences, psychology, medicine, nursing, biomechanics). Of particular interest is work focused on the needs of vulnerable populations in the United States, translational research, and practice partnerships with injury prevention professionals working in the public and private sectors.

Candidates should have an advanced degree (e.g., PhD, MD, DrPH), and either have a strong track record of publishing in high-impact journals and obtaining funding for their research, or have demonstrated the potential to do so. Candidates should also show a strong commitment to teaching and advising doctoral and masters students in the School.
