Steve Marshall, PhD, is an Associate Professor in Epidemiology and Orthopedics and an adjunct appointment in Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also a core faculty member for the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center.
Dr. Marshall’s main area of research focus is injury epidemiology. His current research is largely focused on injuries from sports and recreational physical activities. This includes severe knee injuries, such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.
He is PI on an NIH-funded prospective cohort study of biomechanical risk factors for ACL injury that is based in the three largest U.S. military academies. He is also conducting a sequence of studies on youth baseball injury (with Dr. Fred Mueller, Exercise and Sport Science) addressing protective equipment and risk factors for overuse injuries in that sport. He has conducted a series of studies on the prevention and management of concussions (with Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz, Exercise and Sport Science), including diagnostic tools for assessing recovery from concussion, risk factors for concussion, and long-term sequelae of concussion (such as dementia).
He has a strong secondary interest in biostatistics, epidemiologic methods, and epidemiologic data analysis. He teaches courses in intervention evaluation and longitudinal data analysis in the Department of Epidemiology, and has research interests in longitudinal data analysis, assessment of interaction, and design of injury studies. |
