The Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital is focused on reducing injuries in our region. The Center conducts injury control research, develops and implements community-based injury prevention projects and educates health professionals, policy makers and the public about the burden of injury in Rhode Island. COMMUNITY OUTREACH As an Injury Free Coalition for Kids site, a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation consisting of 40 hospital-based, community-oriented sites aimed at preventing childhood injuries, the Center has conducted numerous community outreach projects. Current projects include: • Kohl’s Cares Car Seat Check Program • Hospital Based Helmet Distribution • Safe Play Initiative RESEARCH With funding from NIH, CDC, and foundations, the Center has a strong history of conducting injury prevention research encompassing behavioral risk reduction, dissemination, intervention evaluation, foundational and developmental research. Current projects include: • Project REDUCE • Reducing Youthful Dangerous Driving (RYDD) • Reducing Offenses in Adolescent Drivers (ROAD) • Sailing Injuries • Project ACT EDUCATION The Center offers extensive education to physicians-in-training in both research and advocacy. Encouraging these individuals to become advocates helps to ensure that laws and policies designed to prevent injuries are effective and in line with the current state of medical knowledge. Current projects include: • Injury Prevention Education for Brown University Medical Students • Brown Medical School Community Health Clerkship Field Experience • Brown University MPH Assistantship Program
