Gender Disparity
In 2004-2005, men had higher injury hospital discharge rates than women did for all age groups up to 65 years of age and over. The disparity was most pronounced for young people 15-24 years of age, with the rate for young men 2.1 times that for young women. Source: CDC/NCHSBergen G,Chen LH, Warner M, Fingerhut LA. Member Update 07/09

July 2009 - Member Update

Dear SAVIR Members,

Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has named Dr. Ileana Arias, former Director of the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as Acting Deputy Director for CDC. Dr. Arias has served as the Director of NCIPC since 2004, and she will be a key strategic partner to raise awareness of violence and injury within CDC. SAVIR wishes her the best of luck in her new role.

Louise Galaska has been named acting Director for NCIPC. Louise currently is Chief Management Officer (CMO) in the Coordinating Center for Environmental Health and Injury Prevention (CCEHIP). She previously served as Deputy Director for NCIPC and has a wealth of knowledge about injury and violence prevention.

SAVIR looks forward to ongoing collaborations with CDC and NCIPC to promote violence and injury prevention, and we have many exciting opportunities to accomplish this mission. One exciting new development is a recent contract with the NCIPC to work with SAVIR to promote the NCIPC Injury Research Agenda. We'll keep you posted on developments of this scope of work as it moves forward.

Please join me in congratulating Ileana Arias on her new position and welcoming Louise Galaska to the NCIPC.

Yours Truly,

Corinne Peek-Asa, PhD
President, Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research
